01 · Why small dollars
Many small gifts keep us honest.
Independence
When no single donor pays the bills, no single donor can set the agenda. Thousands of small gifts can't be withdrawn to punish an inconvenient finding.
Credibility
Lawmakers who refuse corporate money can cite us without anyone asking who paid for the research. The answer is always on this page.
Accountability
Our supporters are the same people our policies are written for. If we stop serving them, they stop giving. That is the right incentive.
It works. People's Policy Project, another independent left policy shop, is supported by more than 1,800 small donors pledging $5 to $15 a month, which lets it work without corporate money.
